Storybook Theatre: Stories That Sing

It's a special treat for everyone when we come to your site with interactive mini-performances in your school auditorium, library, or classroom. Our storyteller and musician demonstrate the art of storytelling through theatre, with puppets, music, movement, fun and laughter -- evoking the world of imagination, while reinforcing essential literacy skills! Ideal for up to 100 children.

Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin is an original tale that, like the ugly duckling, is really about someone different who finds acceptance. Our storyteller and musician tell the story of Lumpy Bumpy, the funniest-looking pumpkin in Farmer Joe's pumpkin patch, who in the end achieves pumpkin success by becoming the scariest Jack O'Lantern of them all! This storytelling uses a collapsible "pop-up book" pumpkin patch set, complete with a removable group of rod figures to portray some of the characters in the story.

Tall tale is right! Big Annie is a larger-than-life heroine. She's a Creole flatboat captain who uses her amazing strength, with the help of some animal friends -- and the help of the children in the audience -- to pull a boatload of toys through a terrible storm one Christmas Eve long ago. The music in the show captures the sound of New Orleans jazz and the power of the American work song. With the work song "Heave Ho! Pull the boat, Big Annie," the children will soon be enthusiastically singing along to help Big Annie weather the storm and get the toys to the children!

How The Turtle Got It's Shell

The 3-dimensional puppets in this engaging show look like they jumped off the page of the book into your space. At the opening of the show the drummer introduces the African instruments and various words from African languages. The Growing Rock

The Native Americans believe that everything has a spirit, a kind of life of its own. The sun, the wind, the moon...and even the rocks. So sets the stage for The Growing Rock, a Southwest Native American tale which invokes the magic of the desert and its creatures. The puppets look like they have just jumped off the page of the storybook into your space. The children will clap and sing and chant with Mamma Bluefeather, who has not yet taught her babies to fly; the Baby Bluebirds, who are trapped on the top of the Growing Rock because of jealous Crow; the Mountain Lion, the Rabbit and the Buzzard who try to help; and finally the Measuring Worm, who is a powerful Medicine Man. Our storyteller/puppeteer and musician/guitarist actively engage the help of the children in the audience to resolve the story and bring the baby birds to safety. Adapted from Native American songs and rhythms, the score and chanting contribute to the power and poignancy of The Growing Rock.

PRICE: $595*, Book now by calling (212) 724-0677!

Duration: 45 min.

*Additional cost if audience is larger than 100 children and/or a sound system is required.

“What a wonderful story The Growing Rock is.   I couldn’t think of a better way to teach kids about jealousy, sibling rivalry,  and the belief that everything has a spirit, a life of its own, even the Rocks. To my surprise it also gave such a strong comment on individual and community support and never giving up.”   School Librarian observing show.
